Network Rail retail income hits £750m as London Bridge opens with 10 times as much retail space as before

Top Finance News - Tue, 01/02/2018 - 5:16am

Network Rail's income from shops, cafés and pubs has hit nearly £750m last year, new figures show. Today the state-owned company opens the overhauled London Bridge station, which boasts 10 times as much retail space as before. Income from its growing retail estate has risen a third in five years as the regeneration of King's Cross and Birmingham New Street stations contributed larger sums from improved shops and food and drink outlets. London Bridge fully reopened today after a major redevelopment which began in the spring of 2013. The overhaul – the biggest investment in a single station by Network Rail – will mean an increase of 30pc in terms of passenger capacity, and once a new timetable is implemented in May it should mean there is a train every two to three minutes at peak times. A digital traffic management system has been installed to help control the huge increase in trains set to run through the station, which The Daily Telegraph saw just weeks before the works were completed. A behind-the-scenes look at the refurbishment of London Bridge station  Credit: Eddie Mulholland for The Telegraph The platforms will be able to accommodate 12-coach trains and each one will also be covered with canopies longer than the nearby Shard’s height of 310m. And the station will have 10 times the retail space it did before redevelopment work began. Major tenants such as M&S Food will be present, but Simon Blanchflower, the major programme director for the Thameslink project which encompasses London Bridge, said some units would be offered at lower rents to help local businesses establish a presence at the station.
